Opossums

Opossums are omnivorous, eating anything that comes their way. Opossums are quite the beneficial presence to have in the natural environment, offering favorable behavior to the ecosystem. C.H. ANIMAL CONTROL aims to capture and release opossums to more suitable habitats when possible since opossums are not a high rabies vector, contribute their foraging conducts to the environment, and pose little threats to humans.

Opossums become a problem to homeowners when they eat pet’s food, get into garbage, enjoy a garden feast, or in the worst case, have an effect on livestock. Dealing with pet food and garbage are easy remedies; C.H. ANIMAL CONTROL will capture and release the opossum, then educate the homeowner to regulate feeding pets and seal up garbage in containers. The garden feast may either need a fencing setup or a capture / relocate process as well, which is determined by the situation itself as well as the homeowner’s expectations. Problems with livestock are an altogether different issue. Opossums become a problem to livestock upon education by the homeowner, on average anyway. This is how: the homeowner provides scraps, or overfeeds the animals; an opossum comes along and finds an easy meal, likely over and again. But when there are no more scraps or feed, the opossum will find the eggs or young, when the fowl slouch on laying, the opossums will go for the live meat, attacking the chickens/ducks/quail/ etc.. This is a fact witnessed through the iron sights on more than one occasion. Unfortunately, once a wild animal learns to kill and feed on livestock, it will recognize this predominant food source; and furthermore, rear its young to such kind of feeding situation.

Relocation of opossums that kill and eat animals is not illegal, but may be obtrusive when the opossum locates another homeowner’s livestock; in which case, it is advisable to have the opossums that kill livestock humanely removed.

C.H. ANIMAL CONTROL will professionally service an issue with an opossum in concern to the safety and well-being of the homeowners and their families, as well as to the humane treatment of these beneficial creatures.
